The front of the box represents our filters that help us make sense of the world.
One of the simplest filters to understand is language. Either I can understand what is being said, or can’t. If I don’t have the appropriate filter, the words just bounce off my box.
There are any number of filters available to us, and the purpose of this portion of the process is to raise the participant’s awareness that what they experience is unique to them. We ask participants to think about what some of the major filters are that they use when trying to understand the focus question.
One easy way to get people to find filters is have them get in a circle with four other people, and say something that is true about them, but no one else in the circle. Each one of these differences provides a different access an availability to the topic at hand.
